What is neighborhood school?

A neighborhood school is a school that primarily serves students who live in a geographically defined area surrounding the school. Children are assigned to that school based on their residential address. This contrasts with schools that draw students from a wider area, or that are specialized in some way (e.g., magnet schools, charter schools). The defining characteristic is the close proximity between the school and the homes of its students.
