How cold does it have to be delay school?

There is no single temperature that determines whether or not school will be delayed or canceled due to cold weather. School districts use a variety of criteria to make this decision, including:

- The temperature at which the wind chill is expected to reach -20 degrees Fahrenheit or lower

- The expected precipitation

- The snow accumulation

- The ice accumulation

- The wind speed

- The visibility

- The road conditions

- The availability of buses and other transportation

- The ability of students and staff to walk to and from school

Some school districts also have policies that allow for schools to be delayed or canceled if the temperature is below a certain threshold, regardless of the other factors listed above.

In general, school districts will make the decision to delay or cancel school as early as possible, so that parents and students have time to make arrangements.
