Calcium is the most important mineral for the structure and growth of teeth. Teach children which foods are high in calcium by allowing them to taste different calcium-rich foods. You can provide them with cheese, broccoli, tahini, almonds, Brazil nuts or other foods high in calcium. Make sure kids do not have any allergies before feeding them these foods.
Give kids in the class celery to show them how beneficial the vegetable is for the health of their teeth. Celery can help neutralize the bacteria that causes cavities by producing a lot of saliva. Celery also helps keep teeth clean and massages the gums. Kids will have fun crunching and munching while they learn about healthy dental care.
Fluoride is essential to a healthy smile. Soak one egg in fluoride for 24 hours. The next day, put the egg that was soaked in fluoride in a jar of vinegar. Place an egg that was not soaked in fluoride in a separate jar of vinegar. After 24 hours, students can observe the soft egg shell of the egg that was not soaked in fluoride and compare it to the hard shell of the egg that was soaked in fluoride. Teach children how to get fluoride through their diet by drinking plenty of water.
Teach children about sugar and cavities. Provide children with coloring sheets that show them the effects eating too much sugar will have on their teeth. The coloring sheets should depict the cavity as a monster or another type of villain that invades the mouth. This is also an opportunity to stress the importance of brushing teeth after sugary snacks.
