Even though they're not outside, kindergarten pupils can stay active and get exercise in the classroom. Try a game of Follow the Leader. Lead the pupils all over the room, having them jump, run in place and other active movements. In Red Light, Green Light, the pupils start 15 to 20 feet away from you; they walk or run toward you when you say "green light" and stop when you say "red light."
One quick indoor recess activity is a simple play time using materials from the classroom that can be put away quickly when recess is over. For example, bring out building blocks, snap-together foam panels or other building play materials and let pupils create a structure. Pupils could also play with puppets and put on an impromptu show, or play with kitchen toys and create a pretend feast.
Put on peppy music and dance in a group, making sure there is enough room so children don't bump into each other. Or have a "percussion party." Encourage pupils to drum on anything that's not dangerous or breakable. They can use their hands, but they can also use rulers, pencils or other objects. Talk about the different sounds made by the surfaces and by what is used to strike them.
If your classroom has access to a gym in your school, take the pupils there for a quick open gym. They can play tag, leapfrog or other games they might play during recess on the playground, run races the length or width of the gym, shoot baskets or other simple activities using balls or other gym equipment.
