Read your students the book "Maisy's Wonderful Weather Book" by Lucy Cousin to teach them about different types of weather. Create a chart to monitor weather conditions on a daily basis. Write the question "What is the weather like today?" above the chart. Ask the children what the weather is like and record the correct answer daily below the question, such as "It is cold", "It is raining" "It is windy." Ask the children to draw pictures of the day's weather to reinforce the lesson on weather types.
Teach your class about wind and wind directions with this outdoor activity on a windy day. Take a weather vane or any item that spins in the wind on a base to an outside area. Provide the children with bubble solution and bubble wands. Using a compass, explain the four directions and how a westerly wind comes from the west, for example. Have the children blow bubbles and observe which direction the wind carries the bubbles. Let the children guess the wind direction.
Read the class a book about weather, such as "Oh Say, Can You Say What's the Weather Today?": All About Weather from the Cat in the Hat Learning series by Dr. Seuss. Provide a craft related to rainy weather, such as coloring umbrellas. Print an activity sheet, such as "Find the matching umbrella," from the Internet for each child to complete.
Read the story "The Snowman" by Raymond Briggs to kindergartners. Provide the children with a white felt cut-out of a snowman. Give them colored felt pieces to place noses, eyes, buttons and scarves on their snowmen. Once they are happy with the way their snowman looks, have them glue the pieces onto the snowman. Make a wall display of their snowmen to decorate the classroom during a winter month.
