Kindergarten Activities for One Red Rooster

"One Red Rooster" by Kathleen Sullivan Carroll is a bright book designed for young children. The book introduces rhyming, numbers, colors and barnyard animals and their noises to children. Activities designed around the book's theme can help kindergartners learn a variety of skills while having fun.
  1. Farm Animal Flashcards

    • Create sets of flashcards with a picture of barn animals from "One Red Rooster" with the corresponding word written on the back. Have students try to read the word on the back before showing them the picture of the animal on the front.

    Rooster Craft

    • Create a rooster using the kindergartners' handprints. This will help introduce them to the red rooster character. Have students trace both hands on a piece of red card stock and cut it out. Then, cut out a white circle from paper and glue one red handprint to the top and one to the bottom; this makes up the crest and the wattle of the rooster. Then, two smaller yellow triangles can be cut out and glued on for the beak, and the eyes can be colored in with a marker. A popsicle stick can be added to create a puppet that children can hold while listening the story being read aloud.

    "R" Is for Rooster

    • Use an activity sheet to talk about "One Red Rooster" and the letter "R" that is used throughout the book. You can use printing practice sheets with such words as red, and rooster on them, or you can simply have students trace the letter "R" over and over.

    Red Collage

    • Give kindergartners several sheets of white and red construction paper, scissors and glue. Let them look through magazines to find pictures of red items. Pictures can be cut out and then glued onto their papers to make red collages. You can modify this activity by having precut pictures on each table instead of magazines that need to be cut.
