Starfall Computer Games

Starfall, a website for children learning to read English, combines bright colors and animation with solid phonics and early language skills. Dr. Stephen Schutz developed this free website in 2002, in part because of his early struggles with reading. The website offers several reading phases and in May 2009, also began offering a Kindergarten language arts and reading curriculum.
  1. ABCs

    • Starfall offers beginning computer games using the ABCs and helps children learn the sounds of each letter, which will strengthen phonics skills and assist young students as they learn to read. In addition, the website reinforces the ABCs through downloadable applications children can play on phones.

    Learn to Read

    • The Learn to Read section offers short stories with beginning, three-letter, short-vowel words, such as cat, duck and big. The section advances to stories with long-vowel words, such as sheep, tale and ride. It includes basic sight words. Word hunts, letter-writing skills and creating calendars provide young learners with opportunities to expand their reading skills. Holiday games and stories engage beginning readers with a wide variety of seasonal activities such as fall, Groundhog Day and Valentine's Day.

    It's Fun to Read

    • This section has a all types of games and activities to stimulate beginning readers. Bird riddles engage children with animation and scientific information. Tongue twisters help children grasp English language more effectively. Poetry also helps children develop an appreciation for the language. The art and music gallery give children an understanding of such creative artists as Ludwig Van Beethoven, Vincent Van Gogh and Dorothy Straits. Children will especially enjoy the "Who Am I" game, which allows them to the create an image of themselves by selecting hair style and color, sex, skin color, eye shape, face type and pajamas they like to wear.

    I'm Reading

    • This section provides a variety of interactive literature types. Children can read three different plays, taking turns. Several comic choices delight children with enhanced animation. Folk tales help young ones learn cultural stories. Greek myths and Chinese fables engage children in different cultures as they learn the context of fables and the morals they tell.
