Kindergarten Activities for Peter, Peter, Pumpkin Eater

A kindergarten class is usually an easy crowd to please with engaging, varied activities, particularly when these activities relate to a well known song or poem. Use the simple nursery rhyme "Peter, Peter, Pumpkin Eater" to create a host of interactive games and activities for young children. Once the poem has been read, invite the class to participate in crafts, games, and other skill-building activities.
  1. Coloring Activities

    • Prepare coloring book pages of Peter, his wife and a pumpkin, or look for these images online and print them out. The kids can color the images that they heard about in the nursery rhyme using crayons, markers or paint. You can also create these images as tracer pages with not only pictures that kids can color, but also dotted words to trace such as "Peter," "wife" and "pumpkin."

    Picture Identification Game

    • Create flash cards with pictures of Peter, his wife, and a pumpkin. Hold the cards up one at a time, and have the children guess which card you are holding by asking telling questions. For example, for the Peter card, ask them, "Who put his wife in the pumpkin?" When they answer correctly, show them the "Peter" word printed on the flip side of the image. For added variety, include pictures that do not relate to the story, such as a dog, a child, a house, or a box. Ask the class to decide who Peter put in the pumpkin, for instance, or ask them to identify where Peter put his wife. This activity strengthens both vocabulary and comprehension.

    Pumpkin Craft

    • Draw or print out large images of pumpkins and cut out each of the drawings. Give the kids pre-cut squares of orange and green tissue paper and glue. Teach the kids to twist pieces of tissue to glue on the pumpkin until it is entirely covered with orange tissue paper. Use the green tissue paper to cover the pumpkin's stem and leaf. Alternately, you can use small strings of orange and green yarn to cover the pumpkin.

    Finger Puppets

    • Print puppet templates or draw your own on sturdy paper. Make one puppet for Peter, and another for his wife. The wife's puppet should be a pumpkin with a woman emerging from the waist up. Cut two finger holes at the bottom of each puppet, and encourage children to color them with crayons or markers, glue googly eyes on the faces, and add yarn for hair. When the kids finish decorating the puppets, encourage mini-puppet shows.
