Make pumpkins out of a paper bag and newspaper. Ask children to crumple balls of newspaper. Stuff these into lunch sacks. Staple the ends and ask children to round the bag in their hands. They can then color or paint them orange to look like a pumpkin. During Halloween, they can add faces to make them look like jack-o'-lanterns.
Cut eye and mouth holes in paper plates to create a mask. Ask students to glue a stem, which teachers should pre-cut, at the top of the plate. Glue to a stick to the bottom for the children to hold the mask. Students can then decorate their jack-o'-lantern masks with markers, crayons or paint. They can hold them while reading a Halloween-themed book.
Cut large circles from orange construction paper to serve as the face of a paper pumpkin. Cut triangles and circles out of black construction paper. Ask students to use the smaller shapes to create a jack-o'-lantern face. Call out, "Eyes," "Nose," or "Mouth," to turn the activity into a learning game. Children must glue the piece on as it is called.
Hand each child a piece of orange construction paper. Ask them to decorate it with a face. Roll the paper into a cylinder once decorated. Staple in place. Children should then glue streamers to the bottom of the tube. Attach a string to the top to create a windsock that can hang from a ceiling or porch.
