How many words per minute should a high school student be able to read?

There's no single magic number for words per minute (WPM) that defines a "good" reader for a high school student. Reading speed depends on factors like the complexity of the text, the student's reading comprehension, and their familiarity with the subject matter.

However, a generally accepted range for high school students is 200-300 WPM. Students above 300 WPM are considered strong readers, while those below 200 WPM might benefit from extra support to improve their reading fluency and comprehension. It's more important that the student comprehends what they are reading than simply reading quickly. A slower, but highly comprehending reader is better than a fast reader who doesn't understand the material.
