How to Teach Reading Comprehension

There is more to reading than just knowing the words; comprehension is critical and must be mastered. Otherwise, reading just becomes an act with no real meaning.

Instructions

    • 1

Read lots of picture books aloud to your child. This will help your child begin the process of reading comprehension by learning how to listen and think about the book. Read books multiple times, allowing your child to hear the stories more than once.

    • 2

Preview and discuss pictures in the book. Each picture tells something about the story. Have the child look at the pictures and discuss the story the pictures tell.

    • 3

Have the child make a prediction about the book, such as "The dog will run up the hill and find a bone." As you progress through the book, discuss the prediction and if the book is going as the child thought.

    • 4

Retell the story after you finish reading the book without using the pictures. Have your child recall names, types of animals, actions, the reason an action took place and other main topics of the book.

    • 5

Talk about the story and connect it to real experiences. For example, if the book is about dinosaurs, go to the sandbox and dig with plastic dinosaur figures. This will help your child connect the idea of dinosaurs with something that can be touched and felt.
