How to Help a Child Brainstorm Ideas for Writing

Does your child have difficulty getting ideas in order when it comes to writing assignments? Does your child struggle with getting ideas flowing or with selecting topics to write about? Brainstorming strategies are highly effective in both generating and organizing ideas for writing. Graphic organizers are simple planning tools which ultimately take the stress and frustration out of writing projects, giving children the power to develop their ideas before writing. These skills transfer from one project to another and will enhance the child’s writing ability right through adulthood.

Instructions

    • 1

Free write to come up with general ideas about a chosen writing subject or to decide on a topic to write about. To use this strategy, simply set a timer for 3 to 4 minutes and start writing without judgment. Don’t worry about grammar, spelling, neatness, handwriting or punctuation. The goal is just to let ideas flow freely. This procedure generates ideas quickly, even subconsciously, without over analyzing things.

    • 2

Create an organized list. To select from several writing topics, create one heading for each possible topic and then write ideas for each. This will give you a quick and clear idea of which topic you have more to write about and will give you a starting point for the actual writing. You’ll have a list of subtopics or points to include in your piece.

Make a graphic organizer to sort out ideas for a writing assignment. The most basic graphic organizer is a web. For this tool, make a circle (or any shape) in the center of the paper. Write the title or main subject inside the shape. Draw lines extending out from the center and draw a circle or box at the end to fill in supporting topics or information. For a story web, create a circle or box for main character, supporting characters, setting, problem or conflict, events and resolution.

Design a character interview to develop ideas for a character. Write or role play an interview with the main character and a celebrity, yourself, or another character from the story. This will give ideas about events or problems the character will work out in the story. A friend or classmate could ask general questions and record ideas as a fun brainstorming strategy.
