How to Use the Lexile Framework to Find Books at Your Reading Level

The Lexile Framework is a scientific method of approaching reading measurements. Books aimed at school-age children are measured with the Lexile scale, allowing teachers and educators to combine appropriate materials for lesson plans. You can use the Lexile Framework to help a child pick out books appropriate for her age and reading level.

Instructions

    • 1

Call up lexile.com. Click on the "Find a Book" tab at the top of the page.

    • 2

Enter the Lexile measure and range of the reader. If the reader does not have a Lexile measure yet, enter a grade and click one of the three questions on the right. The questions try to determine how easy the child finds the books assigned to his grade.

    • 3

Click "Submit." Lexile will produce a page of book categories. Select as many as you want and hit submit again.

    • 4

Lexile will offer as many books as possible that fit the current Lexile range for the child and the selected categories. If the range of books appears to be above or below the child's actual reading level, push the "change" button to get another selection of books.

All of the books listed have a score listed beneath a photo of the book cover. The score ranges from 200 (first grade) to 1300 (high school), followed by the letter "L." You can also do a search based on the range alone.
