The Hooked on Phonics PreK kit is designed to introduce preschoolers to the world of letters and their sounds through yellow, red and blue levels. Start off the 15-to-20-minute daily lessons for your 3- or 4-year-old with the "Alphabet Song," which is featured on the CD-ROM. The first level, yellow, will focus on identifying uppercase letters, rhyming and beginning phonics skills. Your child will go through each lesson on the computer. Read aloud the storybooks and have your child go through the correlating workbook pages. Use the supplemental letter flashcards and picture cards to reinforce what's already been learned.
Once the yellow level has been completed, progress to the red level, which teaches lowercase letters, more basic phonics skills, and phonemic awareness. The final blue level teaches the letter sounds and reviews the alphabet. Track your child's improvement by placing stickers on the colorful progress poster. Completing the preschool edition will set a foundation for your child's early reading success.
The Hooked on Phonics Learn to Read program covers three years of reading lessons for kindergarten through second-graders. Daily lessons take 20 minutes and include the use of vocabulary-controlled readers to build sequential reading skills. Teach your kindergarten child beginning and ending phonics sounds, vowel sounds, combinations and sight words using the beginning readers and fun software.
Build upon the skills learned in kindergarten by taking your first-grader to the next stage in the program, which teaches consonant blends and how to decode multi-syllable words.
Encourage your child to stay motivated by continuing to track his success with the progress chart and stickers. Finally, advance your second-grader to the last Learn to Read level, which will teach him how to read more challenging words through the use of targeted vocabulary books.
The Hooked on Phonics Master Reader is for children who have learned the basics of reading but need extra practice to increase reading speed, build fluency and gain confidence. Assign your child 20-minute lessons each day using the Strange Museum chapter books and engaging computer games to learn advanced phonics skills. Encourage your emerging reader to go through the 64 story cards as a fun supplement to solidify his reading abilities. Cheer your child on as he takes off in reading after completing the Master Reader edition.
