No childhood would be complete without at least one ABC book having been read until dog-eared. The best ABC books are read again and again, due to the richness of the illustrations that accompany any outstanding ABC book. Choose one, or choose several, and your child's literary experience will be all the richer.
  1. Chicka Chicka ABC

    • "Chicka Chicka, Boom Boom! Will there be enough room?" This rhythmic story of letters who go on a tree climbing adventure is a pleasure to read aloud. In fact, you'll find yourself chanting out the story in the car or while on a walk, the text is so jazzy. This memorable ABC book is authored by Bill Martin Jr. and John Archambault and illustrated by Lois Ehlert.

    Dr. Suess's ABC

    • Authored and illustrated by Theodor Seuss Geisel, this book has been a beloved classic for more than 45 years. Who can forget Rosy going riding on her red rhinoceros? Simple and easy to read, this phonics-based book remains an excellent choice for children who are just beginning to read. It also sounds great when read aloud. The International Reading Association points out, "The integration of Dr. Seuss rhymes creates an engaging study of onsets and rimes." On the "D" page, for example, the illustration has a dove, diplomas, a dingo, a doily and many other items beginning with that letter, some of which require an advanced vocabulary, making this book one that will stay on the shelf for many years.
