How to Organize Your Child's File Folders

In addition to germs and art projects, most children bring home papers and homework daily. After awhile, all those papers can pile up. Keeping a file folder system for your children's papers is one way to keep the mess more organized. Organizing the system can be very different from organizing your own files, however. It is important to keep in mind that the system will be used by children and should be appropriate for their age.

Instructions

    • 1

Gather all materials necessary--all papers to be filed, hanging folders, colored folders, labels and stickers.

    • 2

Go through all papers to be filed. Throw away papers that are no longer used. Remember to include your child in this process. Many times there might be papers that look unimportant to you, but may be very important to her.

    • 3

Organize file folders by school subject. Depending on how much paperwork your child is bringing home, you may want to dedicate an entire expandable folder to one subject or might simply need a single folder. You may also want to save a few folders for special projects and art work.

    • 4

Create an area for putting new paperwork. Not every child will dependably file his paperwork right after school, so it is important to have a basket or box in which he can put papers to be filed later.

    • 5

Decorate folders, files and the filing cabinet with labels and stickers. Your child might not want to have her things appearing like an adult's. You can add a little bit of fun and her own style to the filing system by allowing her to decorate using stickers. Use labels to keep things organized. Especially for younger children, whose reading skills are still developing, it is important to have files clearly labeled.
