Healthy Birthday School Snacks

As a parent, you fret that your child may consume junk food that has no nutritional value while in school. Fortunately you can do something about this, even during a birthday party when sugary snacks are usually part of the fun. Create healthy snacks that your child can give out to members of the class to celebrate his or her special day.
  1. Frozen Orange Juice Popsicles

    • Pour orange juice into ice cube trays the night before your child will give them out. Wrap the trays tightly with tin foil or clear wrap. Poke small holes in the foil or clear wrap and slide popsicle sticks into the center of each individual juice square. Make sure the sticks are securely held up. Take the orange juice tray to school the next day. Slide out the juice cubes individually and hand them out to the kids in the class.

    Strawberry Pineapple Grape Skewers

    • Wash strawberries thoroughly. Slice off the leaves of the strawberries. Set them aside in a refrigerated carton. Cut off the sides and leaves of a pineapple. Cut out slices of the pineapple into decorative shapes using a cookie cutter. Slide the slices of pineapple and the slices of strawberry onto a large skewer, alternating the fruits. Place a large grape at each end of the skewer to create a finished look.

    Popcorn Pumpkin Candle Holders

    • Hollow out a series of small gourds or pumpkins the night before. Place them in the refrigerator. Take the gourds, a skewer and a candle for each pumpkin, and a bag of unpopped popcorn to school. Pop the popcorn in the microwave. Fill each gourd with freshly popped popcorn. Run a skewer through a candle and place it so the candle sits on the top of the popcorn with the skewer stuck through the popcorn and into the bottom of the gourd. Light each candle and have the class sing Happy Birthday.

    String Cheese Braids

    • Cut up pieces of string cheese into equal halves. Cut up strips of low-fat cheddar cheese into equal-sized strips. Braid two pieces of string cheese and one piece of cheddar together. Tie the ends together with pieces of tinfoil. Consider briefly microwaving each piece of braided cheese to help the flavors melt together before handing it out to the class.
