How do I Make Thick Unflavored Gelatin for Children's Science?

Gelatin is derived from cattle hooves, and is a versatile substance for cooking. Gelatin is used to bind jelly desserts such as Jello, cream cheeses, preserves and pie fillings. Non-food uses of gelatin include medication capsules, cosmetics and photographic paper. Unflavored gelatin is useful for children's science projects as it is cheap and quick to make. Using gelatin with no flavor added should dissuade children from eating the science project materials.

Instructions

    • 1

Boil a kettle of water. Consult the instructions on the packet of the unflavored gelatin regarding the volume of water to be added to each packet of gelatin. Typically, one cup per small gelatin package is about the right ratio.

    • 2

Measure the boiling water and pour it into the bowl. Add the gelatin powder from the package and stir the gelatin into the water. It will dissolve quickly.

    • 3

Add a cup of cold water to the bowl and stir the mixture. Refrigerate the gelatin solution for two to three hours until it is set.

    • 4

Create a thicker gelatin mix by reducing the amount of boiling and cold water used in the mixture, or alternatively by adding additional packages of unflavored gelatin powder.
