If your child is learning about measurements, gather several measuring cups, spoons, glasses and bowls to put on the table. Bring a large bucket of water to the table. Everyone will guess how much water each bowl, spoon or glass will hold. Take the measuring cup and use it to fill up each container. See which family member got closest to the correct amount in each container. Everyone can discuss the different amounts and measurements for future reference. For a younger child, print a measurement chart so she can see how much water is in a cup or a gallon. This will help her better judge how much water goes in each container.
Each family member will sit at the table and gets two sheets from the newspaper. Set a timer for 15 minutes. In that time, everyone has to see how many numbers they can find on their sheets of newspaper. Use a highlighter or circle the numbers as you are looking for them. After the timer goes off, everyone can count their numbers to see how many they found. For older children, make the game harder by giving each person a select set of numbers to find in the newspaper. The first person to find all his numbers wins the activity.
For younger children learning to count, use a variety of treats for candy counting. After dinner, put several types of candy on the table. Let everyone have a bowl of candy to make a math problem. You could use the candy to create a math problem. For example, put one piece of candy down, make a plus sign out of candy, put three pieces of candy next to that, create an equal sign out of candy and then put down four pieces of candy. This will show an addition problem made out of candy. After the family practices counting with the candy, everyone can eat it.
Do the same with money as you did with candy. Place a certain amount of real or fake money in front of each person. Go around the table and let everyone count the money in front of them. Use bills and coins to do this activity. For older children, put larger stacks of money in front of them and see if they can count it correctly the first time.
