Alternative Schools for Troubled Teenagers in Alabama

Alabama has a range of alternative schools to choose from for parents with troubled teenagers. There are schools that focus specifically on helping teenagers with behavioural and emotional difficulties. These schools are typically located in areas where students can benefit from natural surroundings and outdoor activities. Parents can also choose from Christian boarding schools and military schools as they provide an environment that helps teenagers to change and improve themselves.
  1. Paint Rock Valley

    • Paint Rock Valley is a residential program based in Alabama for boys and girls with behavioural and emotional difficulties. The program is located at the foot of the Appalachian Mountains. Traditional psychological and psychiatric treatments are employed to help teenagers with a range of problems. These may include ADD, bipolar disorder, depression, and issues with respect and obedience. The academic program is accredited by the Southern Association for Colleges and Schools (SACS). Students benefit from a 600 acre campus where they can engage in a range of outdoor activities.

    Pinnacle Schools

    • Founded in 2005, Pinnacle Schools is based in Huntsville, Alabama, and provides therapeutic programs for troubled teenagers. This includes the Elk River Treatment Program, which uses the outdoors as a teaching environment. This is an intervention program for troubled teenagers aged 12 to 18. It offers group and individual therapy and a range of outdoor activities. Participants must complete this program before becoming eligible to attend Elk River Academy. The Elk River Academy is based on a 120-acre campus. With continued individual and group therapy, students benefit from an academic program from grades 6 through 12 accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS) and participate in hands-on learning projects.

    Lyman Ward Military Academy

    • Founded in 1948, Lyman Ward is a military academy for boys based on a 300 acre campus near Birmingham, Alabama. It offers an accredited academic program to prepare students from grades 6 through 12 for college. Class sizes average 10 students. Students benefit from a range of facilities such as athletic fields, a parade field, tennis courts, dormitories, swimming pool, gymnasium, library, technology center and rifle ranges. Alongside the academic program, students participate in the JROTC program provided by the US army. Though it is not aimed specifically at troubled teenagers, the school provides an environment that enables students to see the value of honor, discipline, duty and integrity. Each student has a mentor to address any problems and concerns.

    St. Bernard Prep

    • St. Bernard Prep is an independent Catholic boarding and day school for grades 7 through 12 based in Cullman, Alabama. The school is operated by Benedictine monks of St. Bernard Abbey and offers a Catholic education for students from all faiths. One of the aims of St. Bernard Prep is to help students achieve spiritual, emotional, mental and physical health. Students also benefit from a range of sporting and extracurricular activities and summer camping trips.
