Many public schools offer a variety of clubs for students to join. Chess club, horse club, leadership club and drama club are just a few of the many that are offered at little or no cost to parents. Some schools even offer clubs as part of a weekly home room activity. This pushes students into choosing a club that suits them best so they can interact with other students with the same interests. Clubs are ideal for a student that is not sure what he likes, and it can help him find something that fits him.
For the athletic student, choosing a sport to join and play is encouraged. There are usually some fees for uniforms and away game transportation that is absorbed by parents or fundraising efforts of the team. There is a wide variety of sports to choose from; football, wrestling, basketball and volley ball are just a few examples. Transportation to and from practice and games is often required of the parents and dedication to stick with the sport is required of the student.
Although art is usually a part of the student's curriculum, it can also be an extracurricular activity that happens outside of the daily class schedule. Singing in a choir or playing an instrument in a band is very engaging for students. As well as learning to read music, each student will gain confidence during group and solo performances. Playing in a band may require the purchase or rental of a musical instrument by the parents for the student. Borrowing an instrument from a friend or family member or buying a used instruments are thrifty options. Some bands and choirs also travel to perform, so transportation fees may also be required of the parents.
