How to Measure Scales for ITP

"Measuring Scales" is an educational computer program developed as part of the Interactive Teaching Program (ITP) initiative. Measuring Scales helps students learn the concepts of measure and elementary addition by manipulating a virtual scale simulated by the computer program. The computer program is free, and available in both Windows and Mac OS versions. You can use this program as a teaching aid.

      Download the Measuring Scales program. The specific way of performing this step depends on the operating system. For example, on Windows, open a Web browser and navigate to the "Mathematics ITP: Measuring Scales" Web page. Click on the "Download as Windows executable file (867 KB)" link and wait until the download completes.

      Install Measuring Scales. For example, on Windows, double-click on the file named "ef9aa01991111187f742ffffe5d2eb01.exe" and follow the prompts of the installer. Measuring Scales will be installed and ready to use at this point.

      Launch Measuring Scales. On Windows, double-click the desktop icon named "Measuring Scales."

      Place additional weights on the scale by clicking on the button labeled with a "+" sign; available weights are 1, 2, 5, 10, 50, 100 and 500 units. The scale will show the current weight readout in both analog and digital form. Remove weights by clicking on the button labeled with a "-" sign. Hide or show the current readout by clicking on the button labeled with a circular dial.
