How to Measure Motherhood for a Sociology Research Project

A sociology research paper on motherhood uses one of two methods to obtain research data, either qualitative or quantitative. Qualitative is subjective data gathered by watching interaction between a mother and child or evaluating written data. Quantitative data is physically counting the amount of times a mother completes a predetermined task. Determine the topic for the motherhood research paper. Possible research topics include a mother responding to a child's need, interaction between a mother and child while shopping, and choices of food a mother makes for a child at a restaurant.

    • 2

Prepare a list of research questions. Possible qualitative research questions include: How does a mother react to a child's behavior or needs while in public? What is the tone of voice used when a mother talks to her child? Does the child listen to the mother when given directions?

Possible quantitative research questions include: Does a mother hold a child's hand when crossing the street or in a parking lot? Does a mother allow a child to choose his food at a restaurant or does she choose a food item for him? Does a mother breastfeed in public with or without a covering over the child and her breast?

Talk to your sociology instructor to solidify your planned research questions. Ask the instructor questions to ensure the research topic and questions align with one another.
