An important point to remember is that student motivation requires a positive attitude toward school and learning. Foster such an attitude in your home and your child can carry it with him to school. Help your child see that homework and studying is serious. Take the time to listen to and talk to your children about their study practices and experiences with learning. Clarify how learning can help your children succeed in the future to help motivate them to do well in school. Understanding the value of education can help children succeed.
Help your children manage their time. Plan and arrange activities in the home according to the needs of the children, as well as those of the whole family. Help your children avoid being overwhelmed by work and chores by setting aside certain time for relaxation and recovery. Once the children have completed their homework and studies for the day, for example, take a break with them and organize a light physical activity.
As a parent, you also have the responsibility to show your children that education can be fun. Do so by including non-routine learning activities once in a while. For a day out, take your children on an excursion to a favorite museum and have them report on what they learned while there. Or, stay at home and organize a fun yet educational activity. For example, show your child how to fix a broken toy. Provide your children with additional and practical experiences in learning.
For your children to succeed in school, it is important to know their strengths and weaknesses. If your child excels in certain subjects, encourage him to develop his talents and provide higher-level lessons or materials to prevent boredom at school. When it comes to your child's weaknesses, show patience as your child learns. Dedicate time to helping him on exercises in the subject. Ask your child's teachers for work you can do together at home so he doesn't fall behind in class. If necessary and economically feasible, find a tutor to work with your child at home.
