How to Write a Letter of Sincere Thanks to a Teacher

Teachers often have a thankless job; their pay can be low, the hours are longer than you think and when a student doesn't do well, some parents look to the teacher for blame. A thank you letter probably seems like a simple, trivial statement to you, but for the teacher being thanked, it makes a big difference. Knowing that you are appreciated helps you keep working to your best ability even when your job is difficult.

Instructions

    • 1

Open the letter by typing your address, without your name. Skip a line and type the date. Skip another line and type the teacher's name, the name of her school and the school's address.

    • 2

Skip another line and type "Dear Mr./Ms. (Name)" followed by a colon.

    • 3

Skip another line and begin the first paragraph by thanking the teacher and telling her why you are thanking her.

    • 4

Write specific details in subsequent paragraphs detailing how the teacher has helped your child and the community. The teacher will benefit from knowing specifically what he has done to help so that he can continue developing these strengths.

    • 5

Close the letter by typing "Sincerely," skip three lines and type your name. Print 2 copies of the letter and sign each letter above your typed name.

    • 6

Mail one copy of the letter directly to the teacher. Attach a sticky note to the other letter for the principal, and write "I mailed this to Mr./Ms. (Name) but I though you should have a copy for his/her employment files." Mail that copy to the principal. The principal will appreciate having a copy on file to consider when she decides which teachers receive raises or promotions.
