How to Write a Letter to Excuse an Absence

When a child misses a day of school, the school requires a letter to excuse the absence. By getting the absence excused, the student is allowed to make up missed work without consequence. Not every absence is excusable even with a letter. Understanding the school's attendance policy is beneficial before writing any letter to excuse an absence. The student's legal guardian or parents are the only people from whom the school will accept a letter to excuse an absence.

Instructions

    • 1

Write the current date at the top of the letter. The student's name must also be listed prominently on the letter so the attendance office can easily distinguish who the letter is about.

    • 2

Explain the reason for absence in the body of the letter. Also include the date of absence in the letter.

    • 3

Sign the letter and include daytime contact information. Contact information is necessary in case the attendance office needs to verify the authenticity of the letter.

    • 4

Deliver the letter to the school when dropping the student off on his next day of school. Hand delivering the letter will ensure that the school receives it in a timely fashion.
