What to Expect From Your Child's Classroom Conferences

A parent-teacher conference is an opportunity for a child's parents and his teacher to meet. In some schools, the parents meet privately with their child's teacher while in other schools the student also attends the conference. This meeting is an opportunity for the teacher to discuss the child's progress with both he and his parents. If you're a parent, you can expect to see examples of your child's work, hear about his behavior and talk about the curriculum.
  1. School Work

    • When meeting with your child's teacher, you can expect to see examples of her school work, including assignments like research projects and tests. Because students aren't always eager to share their grades with parents, the parent-teacher conference is an opportunity for the teacher to show parents how their child is doing. This way, when the school issues report cards, there shouldn't be any surprises.

    Behavior Update

    • Much to the chagrin of students who misbehave, the parent-teacher conference provides an opportunity for the teacher to explain the student's behavior to the parents. If the student behaves properly, the teacher likely won't make a point of discussing behavior and classroom rules. If the student is disruptive, however, parents can expect to receive a breakdown of the times in which the student has received discipline, such as detention or being sent to the office.

    Classroom Curriculum

    • Regardless of the student's grades, her parents will receive a breakdown of the curriculum from the teacher. The teacher will explain her goals for the school year, list the areas of study and indicate the lessons students will learn by the end of the year. For example, if the parents are meeting with their child's geography teacher, she may explain that the course's lessons will include units on American geography, climate change and natural disasters.

    Questions

    • You will have an opportunity to ask questions to your child's teacher at the end of the parent-teacher conference. You may have questions about your child's work, the teacher's lesson plans or the units of study for the rest of the school year -- there will be a chance to get answers to your questions. One question you may wish to ask is if your child's teacher has seen any indications of what your child may wish to pursue after graduation. Often, a child is unsure about his future, but a particular teacher may see a side of your child that you don't.
