Read a snow-themed picture book such as "Snow" by Uri Shulevitz aloud to children first thing in the morning. Tell children that as the day progresses, they will write a picture-book story about their snow day with your help. After each activity throughout the day, stop and have kids draw a picture and write a few words on a stapled, homemade book.
Ask higher order thinking questions during various activities throughout the day. Help develop critical thinking skills by asking probing and divergent questions about everything from literature you read to cooking and nature.
Take kids outside to build a snowman. Have kids make predictions such as how long it will take to make it, how big a snowball they can make or how long the snowman will last. Afterwards, read a winter poem together and have them work together to write a poem and illustrate it.
Study science by asking kids to hold a snowball and tell you if it is a solid, liquid or gas. Bring the snowball inside and place in a hot pan. As it melts and becomes a liquid then a gas, help kids to identify these as liquids and gasses.
Make paper snowflakes with kids. Discuss and practice identifying math terms such as different shapes and symmetry. Give kids magnifying glasses for examining real snowflakes outside.
