What is the school responsibility towards students with disabilities?

1. Provide Equal Educational Opportunities

- Ensure students with disabilities have access to the same educational opportunities as students without disabilities.

- Provide accommodations and modifications, as necessary, to ensure students with disabilities can fully participate and benefit from the educational program.

- Ensure students with disabilities are not excluded from or denied opportunities to participate in extracurricular and non-academic activities.

2. Develop and Implement Appropriate IEP

- Develop an individualized education program (IEP) for each student with a disability that is tailored to their individual needs and strengths.

- Consider student's strengths and weaknesses and develop goals and objectives that help them reach their maximum potential.

- Review and update the IEP regularly to ensure it remains appropriate.

3. Provide Appropriate Supports and Services

- Ensure students with disabilities receive appropriate support and services, such as:

1) Specialized instruction

2) Assistive technology

3) Related services (e.g., speech-language pathology, occupational therapy, physical therapy, etc.)

4) Counseling

5) Behavioral support

4. Implement Least Restrictive Environment (LRE)

- Ensure students with disabilities are educated in the least restrictive environment (LRE) that is appropriate for their needs.

- LRE is typically a regular education classroom with appropriate accommodations and modifications, but could also include special education classes, resource rooms, or other settings.

- The goal is to provide students with disabilities with the most inclusive educational experience possible.

5. Respect Student Rights

- Ensure students with disabilities are treated with dignity and respect.

- Respect students' privacy rights.

- Provide opportunities for students with disabilities to participate in decision-making that affects their educational program.

6. Collaborate with Families and Community

- Work closely with families to develop and implement the student's IEP.

- Keep families informed of their student's progress.

- Partner with community agencies and organizations to provide additional support and resources for students with disabilities.

7. Ensure Quality Assurance and Accountability

- Regularly review and monitor the effectiveness of the school's special education program to ensure it is meeting the needs of students with disabilities.

- Use data and feedback from various stakeholders, including students, families, and teachers, to inform program improvements.
