How to Teach Kids to Write a Feature Article

Feature articles are news articles that provide a bit of color. While straight news stories simply report facts, feature articles often add depth, commentary or pizazz. Feature articles may be both informative and entertaining. Many elementary and middle school students learn about feature articles during units on newspaper writing. Feature articles are interesting and fun, and they show kids that news and public information provide an enjoyable way to learn about the world.

Instructions

    • 1

Distinguish feature articles from news articles by explaining to kids the main differences between the two. Specifically, explain the purpose of each type of article and the characteristics of each type of article. News articles are normally intended to inform; feature articles tend to be more didactic in purpose. News articles are more expository; feature articles use more drama and emotion.

    • 2

Read a few feature article to students so that they can get an idea of what a feature article sounds like and what it accomplishes. After reading each article, discuss the elements of the article that make it a feature article. For instance, note if the article includes a lot of word play or figurative descriptions. Observe anecdotes incorporated into the article to give it more color.

    • 3

Teach kids that feature articles normally share a basic structure, with an introduction, middle and end. The introduction should lure the reader in, exciting interest and curiosity about a topic so that he reads further. The middle of the article provides the meat of the story, while the ending synthesizes any loose ends and restates the main claim.
