Constellation Science for Kids

Learning about the constellations can be a gateway for kids to begin exploring astronomy and the universe. Students of any age can learn about the origins of the constellations and their names, the positions of stars in the night sky and the movements of celestial bodies through games, sky charts and interactive models.
  1. Constellations and Astronomy

    • Identifying constellations (from the Latin words for "star" and "together") provides an introduction to astronomy that can be tailored to learners of all ages. Although these stars are grouped arbitrarily and are actually distant from each other in space, learning their names and tracing their contours can lead to more study about stars and their origins, other objects visible in the night sky, and even aspects of history and culture. The science of constellations provides a beginning to the study of the universe.

    Constellation Games

    • Games and challenges offer ways for learners of all ages to explore constellations and their history. Activities can begin with spotting and tracing the contours of constellations with a flashlight or laser pointer aimed at the night sky. Students also can challenge each other to find and trace a particular set of stars within a time limit. Trivia games can teach about the origins of constellation names and the stories behind those constellations.

    Charting the Night Sky

    • Sky charts offer ways to identify constellations as well as other stars and celestial objects. Available online from sites such as Constellations for Kids, or in many astronomy books, these charts show the configurations of stars at particular times of the year and locations. Sky charts can be used as part of games and other activities, and students can make their own interactive charts using construction paper and pens.

    Constellations in History

    • Exploring the origins of constellation names and learning about the history of constellations allow students to place the star groupings in context. Constellation names also offer opportunities to learn about the Greek and Latin roots that underlie many terms in science and medicine. To learn about the background of constellations, students can play trivia and spelling games, and even try making up their own constellations in the night sky and giving them new names.
