Minnesota Writing Standards for First Grade

The purpose of the Minnesota writing standards is to give a guideline for instruction in each grade. Using the writing guidelines appropriately will certify that each child has the opportunity to learn and master a variety of writing skills. The standards discussed here are newly revised and are to be implemented starting with the 2012 to 2013 school year in Minnesota.
  1. Exploring Types of Text and Their Purposes

    • First grade students begin using their own opinions about topics or stories to write about. They need to supply at least one opinion and form a basic sense of closure to their writing. Children are required to write fact based text on a specific topic and provide an appropriate ending to wrap up the factual writing. First graders are also taught about sequencing events in their writing. They are encouraged to use their imagination in creative writing while providing details and events that are applicable to the story they have created.

    The Writing Process

    • A detailed instruction of the writing process is covered around third grade in Minnesota. However, first grade students are taught how to focus on a specific topic with adult guidance. The teacher will work with the child to improve their writing and thought process by asking questions about aspects of their writing and encouraging the student to add more details. First graders also begin to use computers to publish their writing.

    The Research Process

    • Children in first grade begin learning about very basic research techniques using age-appropriate literature or other resources. Students are supported to think through where they could find specific information when research is needed for their writing. This includes age-appropriate factual books and using other people as a resource. The teacher provides a lot of support at this age to help the children recall information they already know that will help answer questions the students are to research.

    Span of Writing

    • The Minnesota standards that cover the overall range of writing are not covered until third grade. At this age, children will expand on the writing process by including more time for detailed research. They also learn more about reflecting on their writing and how to revise and improve their writing in the future. This type of writing is a longer process and is not an age-appropriate task for first graders to undertake.
