How to Use Models to Represent Fractions

Fractions show children how to divide a whole and how to compare parts to one another. They can be challenging for some students, who only see the numbers and have no idea how to connect the numbers to anything in their lives. If you want to teach children about fractions, use a visual model to give them an idea of how fractions work and what they mean.

Instructions

    • 1

Draw a rectangle on the whiteboard and tell the students that it represents one whole unit.

    • 2

Draw a line down the middle of the rectangle and show them how the line divides the unit in half. While there is still only one unit, there are now two even parts to the unit.

    • 3

Color in one half of the rectangle. Explain to the students that this rectangle represents one-half of the original unit.

    • 4

Erase the rectangle and draw another rectangle, this time dividing it into three equal parts.

    • 5

Color in two of the three rectangles. Show them how the dark area represents 2/3 of the original unit, while the light rectangle represents 1/3.
