How to Create a Graphic Organizer on Cultural Differences and Cultural Bias

Cultural differences and cultural bias are two important concepts for students to grasp. Our world continues to shrink with the advent of new technology and communication methods. It is important for students to understand that cultural diversity is not necessarily a bad thing, but failure to be tolerant and open minded about other cultures is. Create a graphic organizer on cultural differences and cultural bias with word processing software and vocabulary appropriate to a lesson on multi-culturalism, globalism and interconnectedness.

Instructions

Create the outline for your organizer using a PC and word processing software. Some common shapes for this activity are an iceberg (if you can manage to find clip art of an iceberg, that would be the easiest) and a T-chart. Make a T-chart by drawing a line across the top of the page and one down the middle, effectively dividing the page in two. Other outline shape possibilities are a stem and leaf organizer (a line down one side with "leaves" or boxes branching from the side), or a basic chart. Include spaces inside whatever form you choose for details about each culture about which the students will write.

    • 2

Create a text box with a word bank in which students can include key vocabulary in each section of the graphic organizer. For example, if your organizer is in the shape of an iceberg, you may direct students to put items that are obvious "surface" culture above the iceberg and less obvious "deep" culture below the iceberg. Place words such as, "games," "cooking," and "dress" beside the organizer but neither on the top nor the bottom, so that students can fill their organizer in by placing these words in the correct spot. Direct more advanced students to fill in a T-chart or stem and leaf organizer with details they know (or think they know) about other cultures.

Include two boxes below the organizer, one for similarities and one for differences between the cultures. Then, include space for students to synthesize a statement about cultural bias. For younger students, you may provide a sentence starter such as, "Cultural bias is when...." Provide vocabulary words for intermediate students such as, "Globalization," "Interconnectedness," and "Assimilation." Direct advanced students to respond to a prompt such as, "How is an awareness of cultural differences beneficial to a global economy?"
