Writing Activities on the Middle Ages

Social studies or history teachers in K-12 schools, as well as college and university professors specializing in medieval history, have many topics to choose from when formulating Middle Ages writing assignments for their students. The plague, the crusades and medieval personalities are just some of the subjects students can cover for their projects when studying the period.
  1. The Black Death

    • Teachers and professors can give their students the option of either writing a comprehensive report about the plague with bibliographic references or designing a PowerPoint presentation with historical images, statistics and footnotes related to the subject. For example, students may decide to write only about the plague's spread to London if they have enough credible information.

    The Crusades

    • The most significant religious conflicts that affected much of Europe during the time of the Dark Ages still resonates with the rest of the world in the 21st century. The subject offers college and university students the opportunity to write a detailed analytical report, treatise or dissertation on the similarities and differences between this period of religious conflicts and the current conflicts affecting Christians, Muslims, and other religious groups across the globe. In addition, both K-12 and college students could write individual biographies of Pope Urban II and other major players in the conflicts.

    The Hundred Years War

    • Students in K-12 schools and in college can write reports on the causes of this conflict, which lasted from 1337 until 1453, the kings and queens who played a role in spearheading it, and how England and France coped with the atrocities committed during the conflict. They can also design their own PowerPoint or poster board presentations to their classes explaining the major battles that took place at the time.

    Medieval Personalities

    • Students can write their own biographies or analysis on the prominent people of this important period in history, including Johann Gutenberg, Marco Polo, Joan of Arc, and countless others. In addition, students can write "biographies" of folkloric figures such as Robin Hood and King Arthur.
