How to Create Change in the Classroom As an Educator

As an educator, you likely have various classroom rules and procedures in place that your students know and understand. However, there may come a time when you want to alter some of your rules and procedures to create change in the classroom. Change is never easy and often meets with resistance, so to do this, make sure you come up with an effective system for communicating and enforcing the changes you wish to make.

Instructions

    • 1

Determine the mission of your classroom to help you articulate the changes you wish to make. For example, your mission might be to create a harmonious learning environment where students feel comfortable asking questions and are able to enjoy learning.

    • 2

Keep your classroom mission in mind when writing out the changes you want to implement. Writing out the changes can help you stay organized and focused.

    • 3

Discuss the changes with other faculty members and parents when relevant. Making your changes known is necessary when they go beyond classroom activity. Homework rules, for example, would affect parents.

    • 4

Explain the changes you're making to your students. This is one of the most important parts of the process. Be sure to allow time for questions and explain all aspects of the changes as much as possible. Try to include lots of details and talk about all of the ways the change will affect the students. Also, talk about how you will enforce the changes.

    • 5

Implement the change and enforce the new standards. You need follow through with enforcement because otherwise, students might just lapse into old habits and not take the change seriously.
