Meet the parents at times when there are no interruptions or distractions. Set aside a specific time every week or two weeks where the parent can approach you. Sit in a private, comfortable place where you can talk to them in a relaxed way.
Speak slowly and carefully in case the parents are not fluent in English. Involve the child in the conversation. Encourage the child to translate or interpret if necessary. Encourage the parents to ask questions. Answer in a step-by-step, logical manner so you are easier to understand.
Share the student's work or assignments with the parents. Show them an essay or an exercise the student has done well, and explain as simply as possible what this means in terms of student progress. Be patient and understanding if the parents have concerns. Be realistic when it comes to dealing with high expectations. Give a clear idea of what their child is capable of achieving backed by proof of achievement so far.
Encourage the parents to meet you again next week or after a regular interval for details of future progress. Invite them to school fairs or exhibitions or simply to share their child's work.
