How to Write a Goal Statement for a Literature Program

A goal statement or statement of purpose is a key when applying for graduate school. When you are applying for a graduate school literature program, you are required to write a goal statement that details your reasons why you want to attend that graduate school and specific reasons why you want to become part of the literature program. Your statement should be typed similar to business letter format. The margins should be 1 inch on all sides of your document. The font should be professional like Times New Roman and font size 12.

      Type the title centered at the top of your document. This can be as simple as "Goal Statement." Skip two lines after the title, and align your text to the left.

      Type your first paragraph. In this paragraph grab the reader's attention. A good way to start is to include a story about the person who influenced you to study literature. Do not indent your paragraphs. Skip a line when you are finished with your paragraph.

      Type your second paragraph. This paragraph should detail why you wish to become a part of the literature program. Include any relevant experiences in your life. Let your passion for literature come through your writing. Skip a line when you are finished with this paragraph.

      Type your third paragraph. In this paragraph describe why you wish to become a part of the literature program at the college or university you are applying to. Be specific, cite research that has been done there or books or papers written by their professors that have inspired you. Thank them for considering you for admittance at the conclusion of the paragraph.
