How to Design Workshops for Teaching English to Children

Whether you are teaching English to students who are new to the language or teaching English to native speakers who are interested in gaining a more thorough understanding of the language, designing your own workshop is an excellent way to get students interested in learning. Workshops offer a unique opportunity for students and teachers alike. Use the workshop to give your students more in-depth knowledge and to give yourself the opportunity to be more creative in your teaching strategies.

Instructions

    • 1

Consider your audience. Remember that you will need to understand the age and ability level of your audience before planning a successful workshop. For example, teaching college English majors would require a different type of workshop than one designed for teaching first grade English as a Second Language learners.

    • 2

Set realistic goals. Goals should be measurable and achievable. For example, instead of saying that your goal is to get all your students to understand the English language, you could set the goal that each student be able to score at least eighty percent on a comprehensive grammar exam given at the end of the workshop.

    • 3

Determine objectives for yourself. Objectives and goals may seem similar, but they should be thought of differently. Whereas goals are meant for your students, objectives are things for which you should strive. For example, one objective you might have would be to get through each of the different parts of speech during the workshop without running out of time.

    • 4

Create and obtain necessary materials. For example, if you are planning on using pop quizzes to test your students' knowledge of the English language, you will need to design the quizzes before the workshop begins. Make sure that you have everything that you need for the specific events you have planned before the workshop is scheduled to take place.

    • 5

Plan for last minute changes and alterations. You never know when the computer you planned to use to aid in your presentation will fail or when a particular activity you thought your audience would find useful will end up being a dud. Make sure to have a backup plan just in case things do not go as you expected.
