The SETCLAE program is designed to increase students' pride in their cultures. African American Images states that by incorporating more lesson plans centered on developing knowledge of African and African American culture, students' self-esteem will improve. Improved cultural awareness can be developed through lesson plans in Language Arts, History and Health, among other subjects.
African American Images indicates that by encouraging self-determination in participating students, these students will try harder in school and therefore achieve more academically. By training teachers and parents in the skills needed to approach student self-esteem, the SETCLAE program can help students meet this objective.
Academic improvement is a main objective of the SETCLAE program. African American Images states that the program is designed to help multicultural students who are not meeting academic expectations for their grade level.
Teachers should be trained in school expectations to improve classroom climate by means of increasing proper student discipline through the SETCLAE program. African American Images believes that frequent educator and parent in-services will help provide the proper training from the first implementation of the program as well as while the program is being used.
