Ways to Teach Adjectives

An adjective is a word that describes, identifies or quantifies another word. The adjective generally comes before the noun or pronoun it modifies. Teaching adjectives doesn't have to be a difficult task. You can teach adjectives to youngsters by making it enjoyable for them, such as playing games or through art.
  1. Name Game

    • This activity will require a dictionary. You can hand each student a dictionary, or if there aren't enough dictionaries to go around, have the students get into groups of three or four. One student in the group can use the first letter of his name and turn to that section of the dictionary. You can encourage the students to find a word that describes them. For example, if one of the students in the group has the name Elizabeth, the group would turn to the "E" section of the dictionary. Then the students within the group would find an adjective to describe themselves: exciting Elizabeth, eccentric Edward and entertaining Emily.

    The Adjective Circle

    • This game closely resembles musical chairs, only the students will be standing in circles. The students in the circles will face each other. When the music begins, the inner circle will walk one way, while the outer circle will walk in the opposite direction. Just like in musical chairs, when the music stops, so do the students. The students in the inside circle will name a noun, while those on the outside circle will call out an adjective. You can repeat the game until each student in the inner circle has had a turn with each student on the outside circle.

    Treasure Hunt or Match Game

    • You can photocopy a page of any novel and hand out copies to each student in the class. Ask them to hunt for the adjectives on that page and highlight them. The student who finds the most adjectives will win. The match game takes a little longer to set up. Prior to the students' arrival in the morning, pick some adjectives for objects in the classroom. Write down the objects on index cards and divide the index cards into two sets. After the students arrive, split them into two groups and hand each group a set of index cards. The students then fasten the suitable adjective card on the objects. The group that has the most correct will win.

    Through Art

    • The students can be creative with this activity. Hand out a wide variety of art supplies, including paint, glue, feathers and pipe cleaners. You can also give the students descriptive words that will make this project easier. For example, ask the students what they can do to the word "beautiful" to make it look beautiful. The same can apply for the word "stunning."
