Register for the test. The exam is given four times throughout the year at 30 centers in California and at more than 250 locations nationwide. In 2011-2012, examinees can take the test in November, March, May or August. You do not need to take all three subtests the same day. You can register for the test online, by mail or by telephone.
Learn about the test you're going to take. You can download a study guide for the CTEL exam at the organization's website, ctel.nesinc.com. The exam tests your understanding of specific knowledge, skills and abilities. Become familiar with each of the topics the test covers.
Set a study schedule. Consistency and planning can help you conquer what may seem impossible. Study a little bit each night and soon you'll have all of the information covered. Or work with a group to test each other and reinforce what you need to know.
Review sample questions. The CTEL study guide offers examples of the type of questions you'll see in the real exam. Look over these to make sure you know the subject and understand the question formats. The exam is made up of both multiple-choice questions and constructed-response, or essay, questions. Practice answering both types until you feel comfortable.
Prepare physically. Get enough sleep the night before the exam. Give yourself plenty of time to make it to the test site on time so you're not in a rush when the test begins. Wear comfortable clothes. If you find tests stressful, try some breathing exercises to relieve some of that anxiety before the testing begins.
