Appropriate Teacher Attire & How It Affects Elementary Students

The way an educator chooses to dress can directly impact the tone of the classroom and how students respond to and interact with the instructor. Inappropriate attire, such as short skirts, overly revealing tops, flip flops and hats can lead students to question and even dismiss the educator's authority and create a disrespectful classroom environment. Many schools have implemented dress codes for its instructors, in order to clearly outline what constitutes appropriate attire and eliminate the negative effects inappropriate dress can have in the classroom.
  1. Equality

    • Many schools require its students to adhere to dress codes and enforce strict consequences for violators. If educators fail to follow the same rules when choosing their own attire, it can create an environment of hostility. Students wonder why they have to follow the dress code if their own teachers do not and may question the validity of a system that allows such inequalities.

    Professionalism

    • It is important for educators to dress in a professional manner. Professional attire in the classroom is typically the equivalent of business casual and should be chosen to reflect and respect the given environment. When instructors dress in an overly-casual or sloppy manner, it is difficult for students to take the instructor seriously and see him as an individual demanding of their respect and attention. Whereas when instructors maintain a neat and professional appearance, it reinforces the idea that the classroom is a serious learning environment.

    Distraction

    • Attire that could in any way distract students from their work should absolutely be kept out of the classroom. This includes clothing that is too revealing, advertises inappropriate messages and is meant to be worn in a completely different context (such as beach attire). Inappropriate clothing choices negatively impacts the students, unnecessarily drawing their attention.

    Positive Role Model

    • Educators are role models to their students and should conduct themselves in a manner that will inspire their students to make positive choices in their own lives. This includes dressing in a fashion that is respectable and appropriate for the classroom environment. Teachers should consider themselves representatives, or ambassadors, for their school and when they dress inappropriately it reflects poorly on the entire school community.
