As you embark on your safari, anticipate seeing animals like lions, tigers and bears up close. It is fair to assume you will encounter them. Other majestic animals you may not readily think of are wildebeests, kudus, antelopes and gazelles. You may also spot some cheetahs hunting for smaller-sized antelope. You may also see hyenas, jackals and warthogs roaming around, depending on the experience you have,
You may imagine herds of elephants banding together when you think of an African Safari. Chances are, you won't be disappointed. Elephants are one of the most common animals seen during a western safari. Other large animals you may come upon in groups are zebras, giraffes and rhinoceroses. If you pass by an area of water, look for hippopotamuses to pop up. These monstrous mammals can weigh over 3 tons.
As you travel along on your safari, you may see groups of ostriches flocked together. These birds are usually about 8 feet tall, and can weigh up to 300 lbs. You are likely to spot different varieties of exotic birds if you pay close attention. Wattled cranes and the stunning grey crowned cranes are memorable sights. While you're on a safari, you may also expect to see some smaller-sized animals. Your guide may point out bat-eared foxed, hedgehogs, elephant shrews and aardvarks. Bushbabies, a relative of the owl, are difficult to detect. They are only 7 to 8 inches tall, and weigh 5 to 10 oz.
Primates are some of the most common animals seen on a western safari. As you trek along the African landscape, look for chimpanzees, baboons and various monkeys, like the vervet monkey. Bonobos, which look like a smaller version of the chimpanzee, are also common in certain areas. A more exciting find is to witness gorillas sauntering about. Male gorillas are hard to miss. They stand at about 6 feet and weigh close to 300 lbs.
