Science Experiments With Chewing Gum

Typically, many schools and teachers ban students from chewing gum for different reasons, including smacking noises, bubble blowing and improper disposal, such as under the desk or on the floor where it sticks to shoes. However, chewing gum does have educational benefits when used for scientific studies, such as longest-lasting, effects on concentration, flavor and composition.
  1. Longest Lasting

    • In this experiment, students will measure how long different brands of gum last. Have students bring in a variety of chewing gum, such as Juicy Fruit, Trident and Stride, weigh individual sticks of gum with the wrapper on and record the weight. Select three students to chew each type of gum for a set amount of time, such as 5 minutes. After chewing, have students place gum back in wrapper, weigh again and record. Compare the results. The gum that retained the most mass lasts the longest.

    Intelligence Test

    • In this experiment, students test the theory that chewing gum improves concentration and focus. Prepare two tests on the same subject with similar questions. Separate the class into two groups. Distribute the first test to all students. Have student group number one chew gum while taking the test and student group number two does not. The next day, distribute the second test to all students. Group number two chews gum while taking the test and group number one does not. Compare the test results.

    Flavor Test

    • In this experiment, students will measure which brand of chewing gum has the longest lasting flavor. Pick a certain flavor to test, such as spearmint. Have students bring in different brands of spearmint gum including sugar-free varieties. Designate certain students as the chewers, give each one a piece of the same brand of gum and tell them to give a signal when the gum loses flavor. Record the time. Repeat the procedure for each different brand of gum using the same designated chewers. Compare the results.

    Dissolving Gum

    • In this experiment, students measure how long chewing gum dissolves in different liquids. Have students bring in a variety of consumable liquids, such as soda, orange juice and milk. Pour the same amount of each liquid into a container, including at least one container of human saliva. Place a stick of gum, out of the same pack, into each container so that the liquid completely covers the gum. Measure and record the effect of each liquid on the gum. Compare the results and discuss what properties of each liquid may or may not promote the breakdown of gum.
