Older preschoolers appreciate praise and enjoy feeling important. Plan a graduation ceremony for your preschoolers complete with mortarboard hats and robes if possible. Call each child to the front of the room and hand each a certificate stating that he is now a kindergartner. Invite parents and have special treats.
Preschoolers begin to gain greater small-muscle control, draw pictures, attempt writing and mimic adults. Help students adjust to being away from you and school with a reminder of school activities. Present each student with a goodbye gift of a play school kit. Purchase plain gift bags and personalize them with the student's name and the words "Play School Kit." Fill the bags with small pads of paper, crayons, pencils and stickers.
Take pictures of the students throughout the year in various school and class activities. Include at least one picture of yourself with each child. Record a slide show on a disc with all the photos, music and a personal goodbye message in your voice to the students. Make a copy of the disc for each student. Show students the slide show and present each student with a copy.
Say goodbye with a picture book remembrance. Locate an age-appropriate picture book that focuses on some of the skills your preschoolers have learned during the year, such as shapes, colors, numbers and letters. Print a small picture of yourself for each student on adhesive-backed printer paper. Adhere the picture to the inside cover of each student's book. Write a brief note to each student by your picture and sign your name.
