How to Support Children's Creative Development Through Literature

Early literacy has been a focus of the education system for years. Teaching children about books does so much more than help them learn how to read. Literature can also perpetuate a child's creative development. Children are naturally imaginative. Whether you are a teacher or a parent, you can encourage this creative development in your children with very little effort.

Instructions

    • 1

Read to your children often or, if your children are old enough, have them read to themselves.

    • 2

Ask open-ended questions about the book. For example, "Why do you think Johnny was sad?"

    • 3

Act out parts of a book with your children. Encourage them to make parts of their costumes.

    • 4

Instruct your children to draw pictures of scenes from books.

    • 5

Make up a song about the characters in a book. Start the song and have the children continue.

    • 6

Stop reading the book a few pages before it is over. Have your children write their own ending to the book. Compare their ending to the actual ending.

    • 7

Ask your children what they think happened after the story ended. Encourage them to create a sequel to the story.
