How to Generate a Grading Curve

Sometimes your students don't perform as well on exams as you'd like. Maybe it was finals week and they were stressed from a surfeit of studying, or maybe the test was just harder than you thought. Either way, if you don't want these poor marks to mar their report cards, you can grade on a curve --- in effect, grade the students' work in relation to each other, rather than on an absolute, 1-to-100 scale.

Instructions

    • 1

Find the highest score. This will be the benchmark for your curve. For instance, if the best-performing student scored an 88 out of 100 points, this will be your benchmark.

    • 2

Subtract the highest score from 100. In our example, the highest score is 88. The difference is 12.

    • 3

Add the difference to each of the remaining test scores. With this curving scheme, your top performer would earn a perfect 100. A student who earned a 73, meanwhile, would see her grade bumped up to a respectable 85.
