Activities for Subject and Object Pronouns

With pronouns, speakers can reduce the number of words they must wrap their tongues around, simplifying speech and saving themselves some breath. These versatile noun replacements can fill many places in a sentence, including both the subject and the object position. If you are attempting to teach your students the basics of pronouns, engage them in activities that include both subject and object pronouns to help them better understand how to put these words to use.
  1. Subject Pronoun Race

    • Challenge your learners to think fast by arranging a subject pronoun race. Write out an assortment of pronouns that could be used to replace nouns in the subject position within sentences. For example, the pronoun "he" could replace the subject "John" in the sentence "John went to the market." On separate index cards, write out sentences containing subjects that these pronouns could replace. Jumble up the subject and the pronoun cards. Ask students to race to pair them properly. To make it more competitive, offer a prize to the student who can complete the task first.

    Object Pronoun Picture Matching

    • Give your visual learners the chance to build their pronoun skills by engaging them in a picture matching game. To prepare for this activity, print out an array of pictures that could take the object's place in a sentence. For example, you could print out a picture of a teddy bear, which could take the object place in a sentence such as, "Peter brought his teddy bear to the store." Divide the pictures evenly into two piles and divide your students into two teams. Give each team one of the stacks of pictures along with some tape. Ask the teams to work among themselves to place the pictures on the chalkboard and, next to each, write a sentence in which the item pictured is in the object space. After they have completed this task and checked their answers with you, ask them to cross out the object words and replace them with pronouns. Reward the team that completes the task first.

    Subject/Object Pronoun Sort

    • Help students distinguish between pronouns in the subject space and pronouns in the object space by creating a subject/object pronoun sort. To prepare this activity, type several sentences with pronouns. Place the pronoun in the object's place in some of these sentences and the subject's place in others. Jumble them up, and then ask students to, as rapidly as possible, sort them into two piles, one containing sentences with pronouns in the subject space and the other with pronouns in the object space.

    Subject/Object Pronoun Challenge Cards

    • Get your learners thinking on their feet with subject/object pronoun challenge cards. To prepare this activity, write the word "subject" or "object" on an index card, along with a pronoun. Distribute the cards among the students. Tell students that they must write sentences containing the pronouns listed on their cards in the positions in question. For example, if a student received a card that said, "Subject -- He," she would have to write a sentence in which "he" is in the subject position. Give students a prize when they complete the task.
