The Lymphatic System for Kids

By learning different physiological systems, children can better understand human biology and the actions of their own bodies. The lymphatic system, or lymph system, prevents the intrusion of foreign objects, such as bacteria and viruses, by regulating the body's fluids and producing white blood cells, according to LymphomaInfo.net.
  1. System Parts

    • Speak to your learner about the various body parts that play a role in the lymphatic system. According to Sigbio, the lymphatic system "consists macroscopically of: The bone marrow, spleen, thymus gland, lymph nodes, tonsils, appendix, and a few other organs." Print pictures of each of these items and talk about their specific functions. For example, the spleen works to filter the blood, removing any damaged cells and allowing healthy blood cells to recirculate through the blood stream, according to the Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh.

    Nervous System

    • As with all systems of the body, the lymphatic system works in tandem with other systems. For example, the nervous system plays a role in triggering the defense mechanisms of the lymphatic system, which protects the body from harm, according to Washington University. With your learner, create a chart that depicts or lists the relationship between the parts of the lymphatic system and the parts of the other major systems, such as the circulatory system and digestive systems.

    Diseases

    • While the lymph system protects the body from certain illnesses, it can also be affected by disease. Create a lesson that teaches students some of the disorders of the lymph system. Some of these disorders include Burkitt lymphoma, Gaucher disease and Leukemia, according to "Genes and Disease." With your learner, discuss the ways these disorders form and how to prevent these disorders from affecting the learner in the future.

    Lymphatic Within Animals

    • Although most mammals share certain traits when it comes to the lymphatic system, they also differ in small ways. Create a lesson that teaches how the various parts of the lymphatic system appear in common animals, such as cats, dogs and frogs. For example, the lymphatic system aids frogs in balance, according to Aimee Phillippi from Unity University. Print pictures from the Internet or a biology textbook and use these to illustrate the differences.
